When Walmart saw the need to build an information database, distribution channel and online community for more than 1.4 million employees, they came to Rockfish. We approached the project with a few things in mind: easy-access to benefits, social networking, corporate information, the ability to share personal stories, questions and videos and a single-source for corporate information and education.
Though the corporate functions are vital to employee health, it's the social component of the site that has become the jewel of the project. Forums, especially, have given community members an arena to connect with one another over personal stories, questions, shared videos and more; a true representation in virtual form of the "family" that both Walmart and Rockfish strive to create in the real world. Personal profiles—which can be customized with drag-and-drop widgets—provide both the ability to post things that associates would like to share and track the things that they've done within MyWalmart.com. It's become a community that's bursting with Walmart associate pride, which is critical to enthusiasm and retention. To date, more than half of the company's 1.4 million associates have created profiles on MyWalmart.com, which is a tremendous start that exceeded Walmart's expectations. The Nielsen Norman Group recognized MyWalmart.com as one of 2010's top ten intranets based on navigation, design, search, personalization and content.
